Advanced, high lubricity metal removal fluid

HOCUT 4940 is free from boron, chlorine, formaldehyde-release biocides, and secondary amines of all types. The fluid is considered non-hazardous under CHIP legislation, and requires minimal hazard warning labelling. The product is compliant with REACH and seen as a “Future Proof” technology for our customers.

Quaker Houghton’s HOCUT 4940 metalworking coolant is a unique technology platform characterised by very long sump-life and versatile emulsion characteristics. The product has been designed to meet the demands of high speed turning, milling and grinding of arduous aerospace materials where coolant pressures can exceed 100 bar. HOCUT 4940 is based on an innovative and high performance lubricity package giving outstanding surface finish and exceptional tool life performance in difficult operations. Tool life improvements of up to 30% can be achieved against conventional high lubricity fluids.

It can operate extremely well at between 6 – 7% concentrations, typically 2% lower than other high performance fluids.

The advanced formula is compatible with all material types including titanium, nickel, and sensitive aluminium alloys. HOCUT 4940 will enable the use of one metalworking coolant across hard metal machining operations increasing the capacity for recycling and waste minimisation.

HOCUT 4940 is recommended for heavy duty machining of a wide range of aerospace materials including aluminium alloys (series 2000 and 7000 in particular), high alloy steels and difficult aerospace materials such as titanium and nickel alloys.

Lab Results Summary


To demonstrate the performance of the HOCUT 4940 we undertook a series of laboratory tests, including lubricity, foaming, and demulsification and wetting properties. The HOCUT 4940 was compared directly with a competitor product used within the aerospace sector. Our findings are as follows.

Lubricity Evaluation

Samples of the competitor metalworking coolant and HOCUT 4940 were evaluated using the industry recognised Richert lubricity method. This method is used extensively within the metalworking industry comparing product performance and determining tool life /wear properties. During this analysis it was shown that the HOCUT 4940 gave superior load carrying properties (higher levels of lubricity) and quicker noise drop off when compared with the competitor grade.

This work demonstrates that the HOCUT 4940 will provide both improved lubrication and increased tool life compared to the competitor coolant. Based on our findings we would expect to see a 10 – 15% improvement in extended tool life, as well as superior surface finish and cleanliness.
